We spoke with Miles Lambourn, Director of Business Works Chartered Accountants…
Miles Lambourn first contributed to the GBU in 2005. Upon receiving the GBU Report (which he read cover to cover) he began implementing the things that resonated most with him. The following year his profit was up 41% and overall position within his fee band went from straddling the median to above the upper quartile.
A hardworking sole practitioner based in Wellington, he has built his business from scratch to achieve fantastic results and a desirable lifestyle. He credits this partly to the GBU, and in 2009 was the top performer in his fee band.
‘… As a sole practitioner, it’s easy to become isolated and out of touch. The GBU is an invaluable resource that helps me to transparently view sensitive information from like-minded practitioners in order to realistically gauge how well my practice is progressing.
Every year there’s fresh and interesting stuff. The industry is changing constantly and GBU highlights emerging trends before accountants tend to notice them. I can see clearly how my staff and I are doing plus identify just how effective new processes have been. Every year I find myself having to implement less.
With the GBU you get out what you put in. It’s a great building block for growth and success, and a manual to refer back to if you ever feel an aspect of your business slipping… . It’s also about lifestyle (not just the financial rewards). I’ve been able to relax and spend more time out of the office. No matter what motivates you, the GBU is relevant to stay on track.
Lately I think I’ve taken the foot off the gas. Now it’s time to move up to the next bracket, a goal that until recently I never saw as attainable but I’ve learnt from those top performers and I’m now prepping myself for this challenge so I can enter the next tier without scraping the bottom…’
